"With the Poetry of the Heart"
is an extremely successful enterprise directed towards helping children with cancer after successful chemotherapy, as well as helping generally disadvantaged children in Austria. The aim is to raise the children's joy and will to live.
In addition, we support children who look after their sole parent with cancer. That is, the child does not have cancer but makes a sacrifice, so that the family can stay together and the child and his or her siblings don't have to live away in a home (!).
For children with cancer, especially for disadvantaged children, this assistance is gradually being developed.
This extraordinary organisation was launched not with money (!) but with donations from 150 companies (gifts in kind and vouchers). All of the proceeds benefit the children. After determined requests, we are now open to accept private donations! Currently and in future, the private donations go towards children’s recovery holidays in the mountains.
"With the Poetry of the Heart” means respect, dignity and grace towards children. This is extraordinary in Central Europe and is internationally commended. Owing to a lack of similar projects in their own countries, today, “The Poetry of the Heart” is supported by well-known companies from Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia and Italy.
Meanwhile, due to its convincing success, the charity has developed into a popular Austrian undertaking with impressive international components. Furthermore, we aim at co-operation with sister associations in Europe and America.
Sometimes, people say: “We would do more, if we knew that the money reached those in need!” With us, everything reaches the needy – it goes directly into the grateful hands of the children.
The inaugural Christmas Gala for children with cancer was held on 16th December 2006, on stage at the beautiful theatre “Next Liberty” in Graz. Now, several events are held during the year.
The initiative to form the organisation for children with cancer was taken by Karin Eder in August 2006. (Karin Eder is the general manager of the guest house Schober and part owner of the Eder Tourism Enterprises in Heiligenblut).
Initiator and driving force of the charity is Joseph Dirnbeck. With more than 800 blood donations (for the most part platelets) since 1973, he is the world's top blood-donor for children with cancer. An estimated 1200 to 1500 children with cancer have either fully recovered or have experienced significant relief from their suffering. Dirnbeck has been honoured at home and abroad.
From the outset, another important post has been filled by Heike Eickholt, a woman with the ‘patience of an angel’. When she joined, this industrious young German woman fitted like the missing piece of a puzzle. She is not only in charge of photographic documentation, but also all important issues concerning Austria’s children with cancer. Eickholt’s joining the charity was largely by chance and more than a stroke of luck.
